While it's got an easy to use UI and seems to be quite thorough(I ran it but no "cooties" were found on my hard drive), be aware that Avast Antivirus is not for purchase; you buy a license to use it for one, two or three years at a time.
And, it was a pain to uninstall ! The product offered 100% protection against both Mac and Windows malware. Now I've downloaded this same antivirus for my brand new Mac. Its authors cultivate a kind of arrogance, perhaps considering that a good feedback is something normal. I switched to this from Sophos and I am looking forward to some of the added features.
For Windows, there's no question that I'd recommend Avast. There are several different kinds of anti-virus software out there. - Many minor improvements and bug fixes. Avast Free Mac Security keeps Macs free of malware using traditional signature-based detection by unpacking Mac-specific file formats and scanning them for malicious content. I give it a one star - maybe others have figured out the Avast quirks(?)

Chased it down with Whatroute to a server shared with LAX, Moffet AFB and ?? There just aren't enough threats for Mac OS X to justify the overhead of running something does non-stop scanning of files in the background. Even emails and instant messages are scanned. This needs to have an option to install without any components put into my system. Avast Mac security is a highly effective solution protecting against all types of malware. Avast Free Mac Security is free.
