However, I came to Buddha’s Brain with some doubts about the whole project of expounding meditation in neuro-scientific terms. It works in a couple of ways: meditators are being monitored and tracked, used as guides to the neural basis of positive mental states which can ballast the growing interest in positive psychology. Remember that all three of these require you to be on your own side.
The final section, on the self, finds another value for this material. Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist and meditation teacher. Gets a wee to technical some time. A wealth of knowledge. Actually, it’s really one author – Rick Hanson – and a second thinker, Richard Mendius. That said, it still feels like the beginning of something, and not the last word. ; neuroscience has discovered that certain areas of the brain are associated with calm, focus, clarity etc.

An exception is the section on meditation, where the neuroscience account of attention and how it works offers some useful clarifications of meditative experience.

The chapter on loving kindness, for example, tells us that ‘Kindness depends on prefrontal intentions an principles, limbic-based emotions and rewards, neurochemicals such as oxytocin and endorphins, and stem-arousal.’ It continues, ‘These factors offer you a variety of ways to nurture your kindness …’ But the rest of the chapter leaves the science behind and tells us how to develop kindness through behaviour and cognition. It is a model of how to write a self-help book about meditation and science, presenting complex material with outstanding clarity and making it accessible, readable and digestible. A watershed work about how to transform the brain with the mind and spiritual practices.
Buddha’s Brain is a clear, accessible explanation of how our brain and nervous system interface with our experience of life and how the path of Buddhadharma can effect a change for the better. Very knowledgable writer but most of what is written is a common sense approach to living a better life. Number one, nurture compassion for yourself and others in order to strengthen your neural circuits. Meanwhile, neuroscientists’ understanding of the brain is being used as a way to describe meditation and account for its effects.
Highly recommended. This produxt was 100% as described and a very interesting read, My favorite psychological/neuroscience book.
Number two, make sure to stay with good feelings as long as you can so that the memory will have a stronger impact on the brain.

Rewiring the brain for the better is a worthy spiritual adventure. But I learned a lot.
I bought Nonviolent Communication because they talked about it in this book and that was a great read too!
– when you measure the effects of meditation in the brain it turns out that those parts are activated or strengthened. With confidence, the authors present a blend of psychology, neurology, and contemplative practice. Here are some ideas on how! A watershed work about how to transform the brain with the mind and spiritual practices. One of the things I most liked about this book is how it explains in very scientific terms the way our brain works. He and Richard Mendius are the cofounders of the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom.
It’s a terrific and very useful app. Hanson calls these practices "taking in the good" or, if you prefer, you can use a more traditional term like "brightening the mind." You can still see all customer reviews for the product.
As such, it is not only an interesting but rather an exceptional book.
The author's mission is to give us ways to reach inside our own brains and create more happiness, love, and wisdom.

In meditation you can experience mental states characterised by calm, focus, clarity etc. I have bought 4 copies (soon to be 5) because I keep giving them away. This may help convince people who trust science and believe that something is only real if you can measure it physically, but people, like me, whose trust in meditation is based on their experience of it learn little from such claims.
It is interlaced with a deep knowledge of meditation practice, showing how these ancient ways can change our brain for the better.
