Indeed, Jonathan Edwards’s preaching has been described as evangelistic preaching that employed a “scare theology.” That approach has given way to a more positive emphasis on God’s love. Oftentimes when such an error appears, it is wise to look behind it to the false doctrine that created it. More and more often I have heard pastors and Bible teachers talk about the unconditional love of God. We wish to be objects of God’s love, not objects of wrath who will be condemned for having rejected the Lord Jesus and his teachings and commands. God the Father and our Lord Jesus love those who have and obey the commands of our Lord Jesus because they are the ones who love him. Hate is an antonym of love – the opposite.

God’s love is contagious. Whatever kind of love God has for the impenitent, it does not exclude His just hatred and abhorrence of them, which stands in stark contrast to His redeeming love. Some may wonder what obedience to his teaching has to do with loving Jesus. It may be true that in some sense God loves even those who fail to meet the conditions of salvation, but that subtlety is often missed by the hearer when the preacher declares the unconditional love of God.
