Play human warrior is the simplest and least Imaganative of them all so is just what a new player needs. I am assuming we cannot transfer equipment as then the game would have to up the bar, considering Dragon Age: Origins has some pretty powerful equipment for the higher lvls and would render DA2's mostly useless. I'm actually not a huge fan of playing as a mage in DA2, because I think it really slants the narrative and makes it almost impossible to side with the Templars. I like the dynamics of this game. Because if you are, there are mods available that allow you to tweak some of the origin system, for example allowing you to be a mage in any other origin.
Although people have certainly done it, and the game gives you people to hate on both sides. My character build is almost the same as Alistair. A rouge that acts like a warrior It's got a weird ass difficulty curve but it's worth it.

I think they're all great but my favorite origin story is the human noble one, I might go with a mage or healer, because if I remember correctly the best mage and healer you get as party members are really hard to keep happy if they're both always in your party, My suggestion if you don't want to have too much challenge with the combat is to play the second easiest difficulty, that way if you somehow do hit a difficulty wall you can temporarily lower it down another notch. There are extra dialogue bits and actions during quests that mages get that a rogue or warrior will not, and it will make interactions with certain characters more interesting.
Does being a mage feel like it limits your choices? If you want to be more defensive, the other two rows are more defense-oriented. Another party is 2 mages, rogue, warrior (you can be any of the 3).

But mage is also kind of the most powerful class in the game, and can out warrior any of your warriors with ease.
