When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. Ultimately, Goreng doesn't go back to the top with The Child, and there's a reason for that.
However, the director has decided to leave it up to our ‘imaginations’ to guess what happens after. Goreng is dead before he arrives, and that’s just his interpretation of what he felt he had to do.

That's Prisoners in a nutshell. Goreng decides, thanks to hallucinations of his previous cell mates, that the child is the message, not the food. On the very last level of The Pit, Goreng discovers the young child of the murderous woman Miharu, who rode the platform down every month to try and find the child. As the film unfolds and the crime investigation progresses, esoteric concepts and symbolism are also introduced, giving the movie an entirely new dimension.
