In general, our impression of TDO: Wide Open is favorable. Because you're likely to spend lots of time in the air throughout most of the courses, the ability to plan for a safe, permissive landing seems of paramount import.
More simply, though, indulging in the game's high-air aspect is lots of fun--this sort of thing is what off-road types must certainly fantasize about. The gameplay in Test-Drive Off Road Wide Open is a little more structured than that of Smuggler's Run. Here, you must capture a preset number of flags, while crisscrossing back and forth through the game's large environments. Regardless of race type, the game's environment will be replete with all manner of shortcuts and sometimes-scripted environmental hazards. The latest in the series, Test Drive Off Road Wide Open, makes a valiant effort to distance itself from its dysfunctional family of origin. The trucks themselves are generously detailed, but they don't begin to approach the level of visual realism seen in other racing games on the PS2. Finally, the scramble races are the most free form. In terms of customization, there aren't really any options to speak of. Two areas where Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open does fall short is in its car customization options and the general setup of the career mode. Although the guitar-heavy music may not be suitable for some, it does match the off-road racing action and generally fits the game quite well. Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open certainly leaves room for improvement. Though anyone familiar with the previous Test Drive Offroad titles will know just what to expect, they'll also be somewhat pleasantly surprised with what Angel has done with this current installment. © 2020 CBS Interactive Inc. This is partly due to the relatively modest visual production, but if it means improved in-game performance, it's an easy blow to take. [22] [23] Kristian Brogger of Game Informer initially gave the PlayStation 2 version a bad review in the September 2001 issue, stating that the graphics were poor and the sounds were so bad because of bugs in the game. All - A - C - D - F - H - I - J - L - M - S - V. 1995 AM General HMMWV. This adds a level of depth to the gameplay: You will expect high jumps, and you'll factor them into most races. Email news@gamespot.com. Massive mountains in the Moab desert and the pristine waters of the ocean in Hawaii border sizeable environments muddled by forests, villages, rock formations, and a wide variety of objects, both organic and man-made. You can buy a car, race it for a season, sell it back for the same price, and buy a new, higher level car with your season's earnings. Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Now, one of the Test Drive mainstays, the Off-Road series, has followed suit with Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open for the PS2. The Test Drive branding only seems to strengthen what Angel Studios appears to be in the process of building: a distinct, tangible gameplay "feel" in off-road racing. Each of the vehicles is rated in such categories as speed, climbing, and acceleration, and the appropriate trucks must be selected for individual races.
In particular, the association with the Test Drive series has allowed Angel to tinker with a host of licensed vehicles: Various versions of AM General's Hummer, Ford's Bronco and F150, Dodge's RAM, and Jeep's Wrangler are available for play, along with many, many more. Test Drive: Off-Road: Wide Open received "mixed or average reviews" on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. The game sports realistic physics, a variety of gameplay options, and true to its namesake, massive, wide-open environments. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. The recent barrage of takes on the off-road racing game serve as evidence of this--ATV Offroad Fury and Smuggler's Run being recent examples.
The blitz races stir things up a bit; the checkpoints in this mode are somewhat scattered, with the next only becoming apparent after you've reached the previous. Despite its rather humdrum graphics and sound, it manages to provide a thrilling experience for the first several hours. Pictures for this video game were provided by: RacingFreak, fernando2236, Konkordski, sajmon14. However, smaller vehicles, such as the Jeep Wrangler, although faster, require a lot of posturing to keep them level.
Developers seem keen on using the PS2's hardy hardware set to render bigger, more interactive environments than ever before. The series got off to a rousing start with Test Drive Le Mans for the Sega Dreamcast and its enhanced port Le Mans 24 Hours for the Sony PlayStation 2. Aside from featuring the standard functions--acceleration, hand and foot braking, and gear shifting--Test Drive: Wide Open lets you control your vehicle's pitch in-air, as per the direction the genre's recently taken.
The same can't be said for the sound effects, in particular the engine sounds. Test Drive Offroad: Wide Open is slated for release this summer. It's tempting to say that they may well represent the next logical step for the subgenre. Limited vehicle customization options aside, the game's career mode leaves much to be desired. By using the L1 button in tandem with the left analog stick, you can manipulate your vehicle's positioning in-air, so as to help it land effectively and minimize recovery time. In the game's current state, most of the vehicles handled rather well, though there were some that Infogrames admitted were in need of tuning--our experiences with some of the less standard vehicles confirmed this. Even in terms of frame rate--where most pre-alpha builds tend to show their weakness--TDO: Wide Open seems surprisingly solid. While the game is in need of some overall graphical polish, the foundation as a whole seems to be in place and is largely impressive. The game's races take place in three distinct locales: Moab, Utah; Yosemite, California; and the Big Island of Hawaii. In all of these races, the game remains generally quite competitive, and the AI drivers won't hesitate to push you off the side of a hill or try to spin you out. The bigger and heavier trucks--such as the Hummer, for example--are more forgiving, as they tend to maintain their grip on the terrain. Angel Studios' driving game engine has been put to good use in the game, and although not quite as free roaming as its other PS2 game, Smuggler's Run, Off-Road Wide Open adeptly captures the feeling of driving through undulating off-road terrain. © 2020 CBS Interactive Inc. All in all, TDO: Wide Open's environments are a far cry from the impressively expansive yet ultimately static environments of Smuggler's Run. Textures seem a bit simple, and Infogrames admitted that some of the particle effects are still in the tuning phase, but we have faith that the game's remaining development time will allow Angel Studios to polish it into a very satisfying product. The early stages of any race can get quite crowded, and shortcuts--of which there are many--must be used frequently if you are to be successful. 1993 AM General … Miguel Lopez Test Drive Off Road: Wide Open, Racing, 2001 . Also, many of the game's numerous shortcuts will involve driving off a cliff or placing yourself in another high-air situation. 2000 AM General Hummer. As with all the races in the game, they are based on checkpoints. Wheels on Water. Many of the vehicles in the game have big-block power engines, but most of them exude a wimpy whine when revved. The ability to tweak a suspension, in particular, is doubly useful in off-road driving games. Finally, the unordered races let you plot your own path through an entire map, with checkpoints scattered throughout and the winner being the one who reaches them all first.
Perhaps it's a bit too easy to spin out in the game, as even a tap on your real bumper or wheel will have you struggling to regain control of your car.
In a particularly scorched stretch of Yosemite, on the other hand, conflagrations will dot the area, while aircraft randomly drop kilos of flame-retardant materials on the track. The game's control scheme seems to be tight in all areas, we're happy to report, and its setup should prove familiar to anyone acquainted with modern racing games. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. Three types of races will be possible in each: standard linear circuit races, spastic blitz races, and unordered checkpoint races. And although 90 percent of the time the game runs at a solid 60 fps, there are moments of slowdown when all of the vehicles are on the screen at once.
The game's soundtrack features an eclectic array of bands, including Metallica, Fear Factory, and Digital Assassins. In Hawaii, for example, volcanoes will erupt, dumping lava on unsuspecting racers. It is also a challenge to keep the trucks level on the game's unforgiving terrain because of the game's impressive physics engine.
