werribee gorge circuit walk review
The ‘official’ time to complete the Werribee Gorge Circuit is listed as 4-5 hours, but if you walk at a pace that is above a stroll I can tell you it will take you much less than that. This is the only area in the park available for rock climbing.There is an Information Shelter, Toilets and carpark.
The Werribee Gorge walk has a good deal of variety and interest, with magnificent rewards along the way, at the same time as providing a good challenge for a range of abilities. Thanks to a rock that I bounced off on the way down, I was able to keep the top half of my body mostly dry, saving my camera and phone from a watery death. The sun is just starting to peak over the top of the gorge now, and the light filtering down is giving the photographer in me all the warm fuzzies. I know what you mean… I really enjoy blogging but I’ve got so much paid work going at the moment that I just can’t make it as much of a priority as I’d like. We did the longer Werribee Gorge Circuit walk which is mentioned as 10kms/4.5hrs, but according to our Garmin was about 8.5kms and took us about 3.5hrs. Catching my toe on a rock, I stumbled forward. There are a few technical areas requiring some scrambling and possibly cables, but they’re not that difficult to manoeuvre. The short circuit walk took me 3.5 hours, and I am an amateur with a low fitness level (lots of water drinking stops haha). This walk was amazing! I did this hike last year with my partner the other way round.
Not because it isn’t frequented, as its a popular hiking spot for many escaping Melbourne for a half day of fun, but because there are still parts you can discover alone. The trail goes first up and down through the bushland, into a little picnic area, and then down along the river where it meanders for a sandy stretch as Werribee Gorge rises on either side. second half of the circuit walk was not that interesting but still enjoyed the scenary. A popular walk follows the Werribee River from Meikles Point picnic area, offering impressive view of both the river and the cliff faces of the gorge.
