It is believed that he was either afraid to ridicule himself with such an absurd theory or that he felt it was not opportune to reveal such secrets. It was only when Galileo Galilei advocated the heliocentric world view that the Inquisition, under the leadership of Robert Bellarmin, became interested in the work. In Ptolemy's model, the retrograde motions of some planets are explained with the artificial device of epicyclical motion. The first copies of his book were reportedly delivered to him on the day of his death in 1543, at age 70.
All orbits surround the sun as if it were in the middle, and therefore the center of the world is near the sun. Heliocentrism is the astronomical model in which the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun at the center of the Solar System.
Copernicus made few new observations. The epicyclic theory of Claudius Ptolemy attested Copernicus a good prediction of the position of the planets in the sky, but did not agree with its task of regularity of planetary motion. In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published his treatise De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), which presented a heliocentric model view of the universe. He found that their positions departed by several degrees from an earlier set of Ptolemaic predictions.
Yet the hallmark of a good theory is its ability to accurately explain observations. This is the way we get depth perception from our binocular vision. Despite the furor over his book, Copernicus was not able to prove that the heliocentric model was correct. This commentary was only distributed in handwritten form to a few of Copernicus' acquaintances. The last major objection was the lack of any seasonal change in the angles and brightness of stars.
Heliocentrism was first formulated by ancient Greeks but was reestablished by Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543.
What really set Copernicus’s heliocentric model apart was its simplicity. In his brief foreword, Copernicus first praised the theory of homocentric spheres created by Eudoxos of Cnidus and further developed by Callippus of Cyzicus, which made it possible to describe the irregular movements of the planets observed in the sky by means of compound regular circular movements.
Legend has it that he was presented with the final printed pages of his Dē revolutionibus orbium coelestium on the very day that he died, allowing him to take farewell of his life’s work.
