The viewpoint trail to the right (not included in the tracks) leads to a peaceful place to stop and have lunch, though trees have grown up to obscure the view of Roche Cove. From June 1 to September 15, dogs must be on a leash when passing through the beach area at Matheson Lake and cannot stay. Although the trail remains mostly flat, it does climb and fall gently in some areas. For a long hike follow the trail around Matheson Lake.
Walk on the Galloping Goose towards Matheson Lake; take the Cedar Gove Trail through the deep woods parallel to the Goose; or follow the path along Matheson Creek to Matheson Lake.
There are two trails at Roche Cove - the Matheson Lake trail and the Cedar grove trail.
Sooke to Port Renfrew, Vancouver Island. Matheson Lake is an excellent starting point for a cycle day trip on the Galloping Goose Trail.

Intersecting with the Sooke River, the trail becomes an almost steady uphill climb as you head through the Sooke River Valley toward Sooke Potholes Provincial Park.Past the potholes, the Galloping Goose truly looks like a train right-of-way, with sections of train rail and wooden ties seen just off the trail.
As it follows the former railway right-of-way, the Galloping Goose runs from downtown Victoria to Sooke, passing through urban, rural, and wilderness areas and ends at the remains of Leechtown.
At a second junction marking a point to Roche Cove Regional Park, go left and cross the small wooden bridge before heading up a steep series of hills. Hikers, cyclists, joggers and horse riders share the trail, affectionately referred to as The Goose.

The lake and beach area are popular in the summer months for swimming and fishing and long hikes can be combined with the trails in the neighbouring Roche Cove Regional Park. Leechtown is outside the boundaries of the trail property, and sits on privately owned land.
Matheson Lake is a beautiful lake, set amongst the hills of the Metchosin region, that has a scenic hiking trail that loops around the lake. Park on Gillespie Road at Roche Cove. Past Sooke Potholes, the traffic is very low on the trail and it is advisable to travel with a companion or in a small group.From Roche Cove, the trail passes through the coniferous forests of Sooke as it follows the edge of the Sooke Basin. From downtown Victoria, drive along Douglas Street heading northbound as Douglas turns into Highway #1. 2020 Nearing the section around Matheson Lake, the trail narrows and is surrounded by rock and trees, but opens again as you near Roche Cove.
