With his hunched gait, lack of people skills, and idealism built on quicksand, Washington makes you believe in Roman 100 percent. Itâs constantly on the brink of saying something profound about the relationship between justice and the law but canât get the words out. Roman could use the paycheck — without it, he’s facing destitution. Can play any role he please. But Roman’s tired of making other people feel good about themselves. A third key character, activist lawyer Maya (Carmen Ejogo), feels completely tacked on and entirely too convenient. He’s also some kind of savant, probably in the Asperger range of the autism spectrum. He really stays in character. Israel, Esq., Gilroy’s second time around as a director, he ventures down that same untrammeled path, painting a portrait of a long-overlooked man in a long-underrepresented section of Los Angeles. For the first time in decades, this man of honor and routine faces uncertainty. Perhaps worse, the movie's main supporting character, Farrell's powerful George Pierce, keeps changing his stance. The film was written and directed by Dan Gilroy, whose “Nightcrawler” centered on Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a monomaniacal cameraman whose lack of a moral compass allowed him to succeed in local television news.
