It's a great book, but touches on a few things that you may want to consider. Admittedly there is a huge madcap caper at the end, but it never truly pushes the boundaries of believability. Scary stories come to life when they’re read aloud! But he didn't, and it's not. It was entertaining, endearing and funny. It's a brilliant story about the loving relationship between Danny and his father. this was what i said to myself; this man teaching his son who to steal from others? If your a lover of children's literature and wish to be taken away by a wonderful and endearing movie with values not often contained in entertainment today, this movie is for you. But Danny himself becomes champion of the world—to the delighted admiration of the local doctor, taxi driver, constable, and vicar's wife as well as his dad—when he gets the idea of scattering raisins filled with sleeping powder in Mr. Hazell's woods on the eve of his annual grand society hunt.
What keeps the whole thing moving is the plot: the book was classic Dahl stuff, and the movie remains faithful. But mixed in with the awful fear was a glorious feeling of excitement.

But this is the Roald Dahl book that has stayed with me, and a lot of other people I've met along the way.
And when Danny discovers his father’s secret, he’s off on the adventure of a lifetime. His performance is quite wooden, unlike the rest of the cast: Cyril Cusack and Jeremy Irons were on great form for this movie, but the best thing about it it was Robbie Coltrane. I love the bond the father has with his son, I love the drawings, I love the coziness of the caravan, and I love the great poaching adventure that the father and son embark on. The father breaks his leg and Danny and his friend both get caned on the hands for cheating. All in all, it is rather enjoyable, if a little dull. I revisited this film, having caught some of it on television not long after it's release.
